The heart and lungs are two of the most vital organs in the human body, making selecting a surgeon and medical facility a critical decision when you’re in need of surgery.
Lourdes Health System is one of the largest providers of cardiac services in the Philadelphia region. This experience makes Lourdes among the best heart centers in the region. In fact, HealthGrades®, the leading independent health care ratings company in the nation, recognized Our Lady of Lourdes Medical Center in 2015 for the following distinctions:
- Top 50 Best Hospitals for Cardiac Surgery

Our cardiothoracic surgeons provide consultative and therapeutic services for the surgical treatment of cardiac, pulmonary and esophageal diseases. We offer a full complement of cardiac services for acquired heart disease, congenital heart disease, and transplantation. We also offer minimally invasive and robotic surgeries, including robotic mitral valve surgery.
The Lourdes cardiothoracic team can often perform surgery while the heart is still beating, thus eliminating the need for heart-lung bypass during the procedure. Our surgeons specialize in such procedures as coronary bypass grafting, valve repairs and replacement, and aneurysm surgery. They also provide surgical backup to interventional cardiologists performing transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR), a new procedure that allows for valve replacement without open-heart surgery.
Robotic heart surgery is available only at advanced centers such as Lourdes, where specialists use it primarily for coronary artery bypass surgery, though the procedure can also be used in surgeries to repair heart valves or correct rhythm disorders. An enhancement of laparoscopic surgery, this technology makes heart surgery far less invasive, while adding precision to all of the surgical steps.
Our cardiothoracic team performs transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) for patients with severe, symptomatic aortic valve stenosis who are at high risk to undergo surgical aortic valve replacement (open-heart surgery). Lourdes is one of only a few select hospitals regionally to perform TAVR procedures.
Following heart surgery, patients benefit from care in a special, cardiac intensive-care unit designed to meet the unique needs of heart patients. With the help of advanced technology, our highly skilled and caring nurses and physicians monitor each patient’s progress as they heal.
