The thyroid is a small gland located in the front of the neck. Though it’s not a large organ, it’s one of the largest endocrine glands, and plays a major role in the body’s hormonal system by helping to regulate metabolism and maintain muscular and skeletal tissue. It affects everything from how fast the body burns energy and uses proteins to how responsive it is to other hormones.
On the surface of the thyroid are four smaller endocrine glands called the parathyroids. These glands influence calcium and potassium levels in the body and affect how the bones absorb calcium.
Lourdes Medical Associates’ (LMA) Surgical Specialists understand the important role of these glands and provide surgical management for all thyroid conditions, including cancer.
When managing a thyroid condition, LMA’s specialists may use surgery for any of the following reasons:
- Removal of abnormal growths from the thyroid gland
- Removal of an enlarged parathyroid gland that creates too much parathyroid hormone or causes kidney stones, osteoporosis or other issues
- Treatment for an overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism) if treatment with medication and radioactive iodine have failed
- Treatment for thyroid cancer
Thyroid and parathyroid surgery is delicate and requires skilled surgeons and the right tools. LMA surgical specialists are proud to offer both. We specialize in minimally invasive thyroid and parathyroid procedures that use smaller incisions and offer faster recovery times and reduced risk of complications. Our surgeons also use technology that minimizes the risk of damaging the vocal chords, a known complication of thyroid and parathyroid surgery.
